My work has been influenced by 17th- and 18th-century Dutch painting—the formal qualities, the palette, the seemingly neutral faces in
the portraits that carry so much emotion, and continue to speak to something very human. Layering contemporary interpretation
onto the work, my images attempt to defy, refuse, and reevaluate. Old stories are part of who we are,
and we need to understand them to move on.
