“I love the old Dutch flower paintings and the portraiture. I am fascinated by the austere surfaces
of those works, the formal qualities, the palette, and the seemingly neutral faces that have so much emotion
in them, universal emotions that still speak to something very human. My work touches on the Dutch
style but speaks from a modern vantage point. Layering contemporary interpretation onto them,
my works attempt to defy, refuse,and reevaluate. Old stories are part of who we are, and we
need to understand them to move on.”
